Pando tribe and their mythical legacy

Some pages from the history* are written and then forgotten while they lie so close to us. Such is a page related to the village Pando Nagar, just 12 kilimeters from district headquarter Ambikapur.  The most interesting thing is if you ask someone in Ambikapur that where is the Rastrapati Bhawan (Presidential Residence), they won't laugh at you as New Delhi (the national capital where Indian President's residence located) is 1022 kilometers away from here, instead they would guide you with immense pleasure to take the same road you are standing on for just 12 kilometers ride.

So move on 11 kilometers from Ambikapur on the northbound national highway number 78, a billboard proudly announcing a hearty welcome to then President Dr.Rajendra Prasad and thanking him for his visit (of 22nd November 1952). Take left turn from here on a dusty road of 1 kilometer more to reach Pando Nagar.

Dependent largely on forest based economy for their livelihood, traditionally Pando tribe lives in forested and hilly areas. This village is in the foot hills of' 'Pilkha' and it's forest surrounding.

In an initiative by the government of India to include them in to main stream of modern life, to rehabilitate Pando in the plain rehabilitated colonies, one of them is this Pando Nagar, for which then President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad came and stayed one night in this village. That was a fateful day of 22nd November 1952.

Office of the village level elected body to govern the need and demands of the Pando Nagar.

Rastrapati Bhawan (President's residence) of Pando Nagar and cottage therein where Mr. President Dr. Rajendra Prasad stayed for one night on 22nd November in 1952.

105 years old 'Gendi Bai', the one and only in Pando Nagar village, who is a living witness to the grace and dignity of that important visitor of 22nd November 1952.

Pando tribe claims to be the descendants of Pandavas of Mahabharata. They quote mythical story in their support of the claim (Aagar Sai, Raja Dashrath Pando and Basant Ram in following picture/2nd December 2014).

As villagers reminisces that Mr. President was planned to go Pahad Gaon to see an old temple on that day in 1952 and he could not make it because of an overflowing Nallah.

Again a dusty road of 1 kilometer stretch from Pando Nagar takes us to Pahad Gaon. A big pond with red lotus, a Krishna temple and no one knowing about it's antiquity in the village just adjacent to the Pilkha hill, that all together adds a picturesque scenery.

The Krishna temple of Pahad Gaon near the foothills of Pilkha mountain range.

The lady priestess Maheshwari Pandey, who is in this temple since her teens (11 year old she was since she took charge of ).

She was so keen to read the palm, announcing proudly that I have 'Trishul' (a trident spear which is the main emblem of the Hindu god Shiva.) in my right hand. I must do some offerings on some suitable auspicious day in time to come, or else..? She was silent on that query!!

*The primitive Pando tribe
Major population of Surguja (district headquarter Ambikapur) comprises tribal population. Among the primitive tribes are Pando and Korwa, who still live in forest. The Pando tribe believes themselves as the member of "Pandav" clan of epic Mahabharata. The Korwa tribe believes themselves to be member of "Kauravs" of Mahabharata. (credit:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surguja_district)
Pando are primitive tribe who largely (95.5%) live in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh. This tribe claims to be the descendants of Pandavas of Mahabharata. They quote mythical story in their support of the claim. Traditional Pando live in forested and hilly areas, largely dependent on forest economy for their livelihood.
After the ban on the shifting cultivation in 1952, some efforts were made by the government to rehabilitate Pando in the plain rehabilitated colonies. There are such two rehabilitated Pando colonies in the Surajpur Tehsil of Surguja district, viz Pando Nagar and Barni-Jharia. Here about 25 Pandofamilies in each colony were brought from neighbouring traditional Pando villages. At the time of their settlement each family was provided with some acres of cultivable lands, a pair of oxen, plough, seeds and the like. (credit:A case study of Pando tribe-R.K.Sinha)

Our life: journey and cyclone of some higher designs

Our icy journey..
Where cloud and rains are our closest companion !!

Our numbered days are often so much mixed up with clouds within and without..
Help-lines are there for the calamity well pronounced in time,
but what about the calamity which often approaches stealthy,
with padded paws, unheard to the cleverest ears..
So was a day..
When oblivious to the approaching cyclone..
We decided to board a train*..
With the ailing aged 'Pa'..
Hardly the train has crossed two stations only..
I was shocked to see the blank face..widely open eyes..drawn lips, dilated pupil..

Rhythm and clatter were of iron only..
Tracks were changing..
So unknown..so sudden..

Iron in the soul..??
or ..Soul in the iron..??

I cried just for this time..
If 'He' could hear our voice..

But it was a long tunnel to pass..
Through the dark icy inn..
The only word floated in to this long corridor..
Of our incessant cry..
Pa..Paaaa....Paaaaaa......Paaaaaaaa........a.aa..aaa...aaaa.....!!

And Day After..
I could scribble on my blank note-book..

Gratefully remembering those, who were with me in this journey physical..
And left silently without any note..

20th December 2013 Fri

Our physical journeys are so similar to our life journey !!
We meet people who help us to come over the life-crisis,

and then they disappear into vast human crowd never ever to meet,
the nameless friend in our longings !!
And so are the lessons left behind

that there is a very thin line between being and non being,
all else is illusion except this hour of present !!

Clouds, rain....so inanimate !!
Sometimes they beat all along-with the deep-in feelings of the heart !!

For a period short..
We get enlisted in a chart..
Each one having different destination..
Life seems a dreamy fascination .

Train Track Teaches

Physical journey sometimes takes us near to structure & incident which brings us closer to our journey spiritual...

I started my journey (14214 Intercity Express)from a railway station ('Ayodhya' India) whose architecture resembles to a 'Hindu' temple...because this is the place where one of the ancient Indian prophet 'Rama' was born to (picture 1).

As 'Hindus' regard monkeys a sacred animal....such protection have caused an increase of their number in tons in and around the city including the railway station (picture 2).

Railway station itself carries many plaques inscribed with the golden spiritual meaningful teachings, as one in the picture reads a deep spiritual philosophy of life: (picture 2)
जनम मरन सब सुख दुःख भोगा, हानि लाभ प्रिय मिलन वियोगा.
काल करम बस होहि गोसाई, बरबस राति दिवस की नाही. (in Hindi)
Bliss & curse of birth & death; loss-profits....love & separation to be lived !!
'Time' just works that way; the way night & day follows each !! (translation)

And as I moved on the track....found the remains of a train (13009 Doon Express) accident just occurred the previous day (31st May), which toll 5 lives (picture 3 & 4).

Reached finally to my destined station with a multitude of humans as usual....oblivious to the incident/accident (picture 5) of any sort..

..and the railway station ('Varanasi', India) again had a look of religious symbol of another kind, the "Wheel" (central theme of Buddha's sermons)....from a youngest Prophet/Religion of India (picture 6).

Such is the journey....we call life....which just moves on in the ocean of 'Time' !!

#the train accident referred above occurred on 31st may 2012 near mehrawa station in between jaunpur & shahganj stations at 1:10 pm, much loss averted as driver surendra bahadur controlled train's speed from 90 kms/hour to 20 within 20 seconds by applying emergency break of the ill fated train 13009 up.

Wind Walker

Once I reach a destination, I feel if I should never go on the journey again. But again when I am put on a longer travel, then I feel if I should never reach a destination.

Physicist call it 'Law of Inertia'. To me it's a great analogy to my life.....
.....as if I leave this earthly life, I shall never ever even desire to leave that journey too !!

Journey Vulnerable

Long journeys, when I have to pass my night & days, makes my thought so vulnerable; as if I am mixed in a population-chaos & given a hard job to emerge at the other end, safely the way I was.

Its so tough I believe, when you just visualize Indian masses traveling ways various...

I always recall my mom as every child of any age do when he needs protection, love or care,
because she is more easily accessible in need, even if she is in heaven.
It looks so untrue, but true practically - as its a matter of need ardent if any and of course practice.

Journey reflections to note in various fragments:

# I'm on a journey. But it seems as if I'm on a time journey, where nothing changes, except the time itself. It flies & goes to beyond, leaving you behind - alone & pondering.

# The vast contrast & contradictions in life journey could only be assimilated when an element of magic is added to the reality. A world of 'magic realism'.

# Ever felt like the destiny of the wheel !!
Periphery on the move; while deep, quiet, cold, stationary part lies in the center - like some far away recesses in my own inner-space.

Forest Flames

I began my journey this morning.
All the 12 hours in trains 58702 (bogie 918403), 18234 (bogie 028233).

Saw "March" through train window. The forest were laden with flowers on their head.
"Flame of the Forest" (Butea monosperma), was true to its glory.

Now again 12 hours of night in another train 12181 to pass with my lonesome imagination in dream,
where more often I find me moving on Facebook Walls with friends & foes (if any) equally,
accepted or ignored (many a time) as well.

Sometimes I see my impulses pass through nerve axons to meet dendrites; ....an electrical glow and then.....ooooops, ......spark....burst and smoke....

But by mornings I always have found me as I was the night before.
Thanks to our super bug..............we call our God !!

Bond with Bond

Almost 47 years ago in 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. in his famous speech on the steps of Lincoln Memorial, has said------ " I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day......"
Like ways but in unlike respect, I too conceived a dream, just 27 years ago in a train journey of South India in May 1983. It happened so that I had chance to look into a September 1981 issue of Reader's Digest. In it was an article named 'A Bouquet of Love' by Ruskin Bond and I fell in love with his writing ever since, a reading relationship grew gradually by reading his almost all articles since then. And that was that.
And it was again a journey in April 2010 to Mussoorie (India) with my two sons : Siddharth and Siddhant.
The day was 21st April wednesday - a very hectic and rewarding, as the first half of the day was spent in excursion tour of 'Camel's Back', afternoon at 4 we met to our beloved hero of writing - world, the great Ruskin Bond. Experiences were beyond word - as we alone had full 15 minutes to talk, share and communicate to one to whom we revered most. Then we spent sun-set hours at 'Gun Hill' (7029 feet from sea level) with freezing wind. Our post dinner stroll was rewarded by a sudden gust of rain shower and hail stone. By the time we came back to our hotel room.... it was a day with many rewards.... as life gives us opportunities.... as time permits in its boundaries.... as we try to reach out.... and as destiny takes us to unknown frontiers.......
